How to Press DTF Transfers

Aug 24, 2025Md Abdur Rahman

Knowing how to press DTF transfers correctly is key to getting vibrant, durable, and professional-quality prints on your apparel. At Maryland DTF, we provide transfers that are ready-to-press, but applying them with the right heat press settings makes all the difference in ensuring your designs last through wear and washing. Here’s a simple guide to pressing DTF transfers the right way.

What You’ll Need

  • A heat press machine (clamshell, swing-away, or auto-open recommended).

  • Your DTF transfer sheet (from Maryland DTF).

  • A clean garment (t-shirt, hoodie, tote bag, etc.).

  • Teflon sheet or parchment paper for protection.

Step 1: Prep Your Garment

Before pressing, make sure your fabric is clean and wrinkle-free. Pre-press the garment for 5 seconds to remove moisture and create a flat surface.

Step 2: Place the Transfer

Position your DTF transfer film design side down on the garment. Use heat tape if needed to keep it in place.

Step 3: Heat Press Settings

At Maryland DTF, we recommend:

  • Temperature: 300°F – 325°F

  • Time: 10 – 15 seconds

  • Pressure: Medium to firm (40–60 PSI depending on fabric type)

Step 4: Peel the Film

DTF transfers are usually cold peel for best results. After pressing, let the garment cool completely. Then peel the film slowly and carefully.

Step 5: Second Press (Optional for Best Durability)

For a softer finish and extra durability, place a Teflon or parchment sheet over the design and press again for 5–10 seconds.

Care Instructions for Long-Lasting Results

  • Wash inside out in cold water.

  • Tumble dry low or hang dry.

  • Do not iron directly on the design.

  • Avoid bleach or harsh detergents.

Following these steps ensures your Maryland DTF transfers will last 60+ washes while staying vibrant and crack-free.
